Before you begin pitching your business or product to the media, it’s always best to have a few high-resolution images – just in case they ask (they generally do). At Three Girls, we make sure each of our clients have at least 3 photos ready-to-go before we approach any journalists so we can send them as soon as they’re requested and don’t need to worry about the reporter’s deadline.
For those that can’t afford to hire a professional, here are 5 DIY media photography tips:
- Make sure your camera is set to the highest quality setting. Print media needs pictures to be 5×7 inches and 300 dots per inch.
- Use a plain white background.
- Take photos of just the product. Although a picture of you might look nice, the product is what the journalist will care about. Don’t include random items, either. Although you and your friends might think it makes the photo prettier, it’s not what the media needs and will reduce chances of the outlet including a picture with the coverage.
- If you have multiple products, take several pictures of each product individually and a few “group shots” with all of the products together.
- Make sure any words are in focus and easy to read.
Bonus Tip: If there is too much empty background in the photo, crop out the empty white space so your product is front and center.
