Sometimes when we at Three Girls Media & Marketing hear of a new social media platform, we momentarily think, “No way! Another social media website? Hasn’t everything that can be done in social media already been done?”
Luckily, this notion lasts only for a fleeting moment, because when we go in and peruse each new site, we realize that most of them have a unique and useful angle. Pinterest is no exception.
Pinterest 101: What is it? As with most social media sites, the point of Pinterest is to share things you like with your “friends.” Upload pictures and videos, and “pin” them to a virtual pin board. There are thousands and thousands of really beautiful pictures, ranging from scenery to cool inventions and twists on favorite themes. (A picture hanger made from a fishing pole? You bet!)
What makes Pinterest fun and easy to use is that you can arrange pictures you like (and pictures you post) onto themed boards. For example, if you are in the wedding planning business, you can create a wedding themed virtual pin board, capturing all the cool ideas you come across.
Likewise if you are a business owner that offers things that a wedding planner would be interested in, it is an awesome place to showcase your wares. Nothing describes a gorgeous wedding bouquet better than a professional, high-resolution photograph.
Pinterest is great for businesses that can benefit from broadcasting their products or services with strong visuals. If you want to use Pinterest as a vehicle for marketing, invest in well-done pictures. Usually there are minimal to no captions under photos on Pinterest, so you really need to have your pictures say those thousand words.
Another thing to keep in mind about Pinterest is that the large majority of users are female, so it is a great way to reach the women’s market.
Get Invited! To start using Pinterest you need to be invited, but that’s generally an easy step. Click on “Request an invite” and set up your account. Follow some friends, and “re-pin” cool stuff. Like all social media, the go-viral component is built in, so your pictures can go viral, too.
Stay tuned: Our next post will cover great how to’s for using Pinterest effectively.
