If you’re looking for something different, there are other social media options out there to consider.

By now we know all about the “Big 5” popular social media networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google+. For small businesses, these have become the ‘go to’ social media networks to get your company’s name or brand out there, but if you’re looking for something a little different, there are other social media options out there to consider.

Three Girls Media likes to keep up with and share the latest trends in social media. Here is a look at the first 2 of 4 emerging social media networks you may not have heard of but you should keep your eyes on in our two-part blog.

Sulia

Sulia is a subject-based social network that connects you to the top social sources on subjects you care about. It evolved from Twitter lists’ firm TLists and lets you follow topics from your local football team to television shows to topical political issues. As of December 2012, Sulia signed up 10 million unique users.

What Makes It Stand Apart? Unlike other social media networks which heavily prioritize the business community, Sulia launched with a “non-profits and NGO” channel. Most content on Sulia is currently coming from RSS feeds, but as each channel has a leaderboard, early adopter non-profits would be wise to create an account using their Twitter login, grab their username and post authentic content in order to move up the ranks on the non-profits and NGOs Leader board.

Medium

Medium, a simple tool for publishing to the web, is a new publishing platform from the creators of Twitter and Blogger now owned by Google.  Here’s how Medium works; you write a blog post, which becomes a part of the site’s collections (such as Airport Stories) on the homepage. Then users vote on posts. How prominently the post is displayed on the site depends on how many votes it receives; it is kind of like a popularity contest for blogs. Anyone with a Twitter account can log in, start reading and recommending. If you want to write a blog post and upload it to the site, you’ll need an invite from the folks at Medium.

What Makes It Stand Apart? Medium is designed so that the experience is just as good for people who want to publish and those who don’t.

As different as both of these social media platforms are, they are moving social networking in a deeper, more focused direction. Next week we’ll look at 2 more emerging social media networks that are changing the way you shop and look at art.

We want to hear from you! Have you used these sites? How do you feel they stand up against the “Big 5?”
