Twenty years ago, professional bloggers simply didn’t exist. If you saw a post, you would have dismissed it as rubbish, believing a blog to be an excuse for a person to rant about their personal life. Fast forward and here you are on the Three Girls Media, Inc. website looking to gain insight from whom? Professional publicist bloggers.
Blogs today are sought out for advice and tips from everyday experts and have the ability to boost product visibility in a unique and powerful way. Having your product or company featured on a prevalent blog or mentioned by an esteemed blogger has matched the hype of having a story in the local newspaper, if not better.
So how do you pitch a blogger?
Don’t pitch your product. Well, that seems contradictory. But according to David Meerman Scott, this is by far the worst thing you can do. Instead, inform the blogger how your product can solve problems or benefit a person.
Bloggers are not journalists. Thanks to the Internet, bloggers can post whatever they want about whatever they want without having to reveal “both sides of the story.” They won’t go and research your product, especially if it’s outside of their topic. Find out the passion of the blogger and stay specific to that appetite.
Make the pitch short. We’re talking a couple sentences and that’s it. Too much information equals too much time to read. If a blogger wants more information, they’ll ask for it.
Twitter is good, telephone is not. Sending a private message or including a blogger’s Twitter handle (@) is a great way to get their attention in 140 characters or less.
Never open w/ “Dear Blogger.” Take the time to research the blog enough to know the writer’s name and information about them as a person. Just as you never open mail that says “Current Resident,” a blogger will instantly delete any email that doesn’t address them specifically.
The blog isn’t the only award. Just because bloggers may not post your information directly to their blog, there are other ways they may reward you for your input such as a Twitter mention or riff in a speech. Don’t limit yourself.
These are only a few tips regarding relationships with bloggers. How have you been successful in your pitches to blogs? We’d love to hear from you!
