Mobile marketing goes deeper than a business telling customers to “like us on Facebook” or “follow us on Twitter.”

Create mobile content for the on-the-go user.

Create mobile content for the on-the-go user.

As a consumer, if a site does not have responsive web design that’s easy to navigate on my iPhone, I’m going to pass it up. If a restaurant’s hours don’t show up immediately with a quick Google search, I’ll move onto the next. Basically, if a company disregards the fact that almost every person owns a smartphone and relies on it like another body part, they are shooting themselves in the foot. This is why one of the main promotional strategies for a business should be mobile marketing.

Some people–I’m referring to myself–use smartphones more than necessary. Instead of expending the minuscule amount of energy to open up my laptop and find the information about a business, I use my iPhone. It’s already sitting next to me and with a quick swipe of my finger I’m online. However, not all mobile content has been created with the on-the-go user in mind.

When deciding to pursue mobile marketing for your business, here are some tips:

1. Responsive web design: If you have no idea what CSS is, that’s okay. There are many free WordPress themes with the ability to be read on tablets and mobile phones, formatting the site to fit the smaller screens and making the mobile content aesthetically pleasing. You don’t have to understand coding languages to have a responsive website and keep customers on your site.

2. Google Business Listing: Every business should do this. When someone does a quick Google search for a business online or on their mobile, they will be able to find the location, hours of operation, contact information and any other useful information you want to provide. Customers will appreciate the ease of finding the mobile content and will (most likely) be more inclined to do business with you.

3. Mobile Applications: If you’re able to create a simple app, these are great for promotional events and sales, and are quickly becoming a major player in mobile marketing. By having coupons and special deals available when a customer downloads the app, it will keep them engaged with your business and eager for the next sale. There’s a reason why I have a Joann’s Fabric app on my phone–and it’s not too browse through photos of fabrics.

As customers turn to smartphones as their primary mode of getting information, mobile marketing has become a necessity. Why not jump on the bandwagon now?
