This post is a continuation of our Platform Profile series. Last week we discussed basic etiquette a person should practice on LinkedIn. Now it’s time to dive into a bit of uncharted territory: LinkedIn groups.

Like any new kid would feel in an unknown place, joining a group can be a bit intimidating at first. What are you going to say? Should you reply to someone else’s post? Should you offer some controversial banter? Stop right there and refocus your intent on joining a group. The number one question you should ask yourself is, “How will this promote my business?” Here are some suggestions to get you going on the most essential B2B marketing platform.

How do you set yourself apart in the group?

Be Directly Involved

Just because you post a discussion topic doesn’t mean everyone is now checking out your LinkedIn page. The goal is to attract more prospects and future customers are much more interested in an invested business who cares about their opinions. Set up automated messages for new members that are welcoming and answer questions directly and promptly within the group.

Keep Content Relevant

Nobody likes reading about a study that was taken in 2007. They also don’t want to read about cats when the group revolves around employee engagement or ergonomics. The best part about LinkedIn groups? People want to hear about your business’ field because it hopefully relates to the group’s topic. So give them what they want.

Search for Leads

While participating and/or managing your LinkedIn groups, be on the lookout for prospective members that could turn into clients. LinkedIn has a great new tool called Advanced People Search that you can use to farm a specific group of people. Example: search for CFO of businesses with less than 100 employees.

Advertise!

LinkedIn now has an ad feature (you have to pay for it) that allows you to advertise your business front and center. In your LinkedIn groups, you can specify which group will see the ad and target your ads accordingly.

Joining a LinkedIn group is easy; it’s the commitment of managing and participating in the group that will challenge you. What other tips do you have about LinkedIn groups?
