Why are memes a powerful marketing tool? As The Moz Blog explains, “Memes have two important properties that make them the ideal tool for social media and link building campaigns. 1) Memes are viral and 2) memes are easy to make.” The blogger goes on to explain how to research popular memes and make them yourself, which is definitely worth a read, but I want to focus more on using memes for your business.
How can you add memes into your social media strategy? Here are three ways to incorporate these amusing visuals:
- As you draft your various social media updates, visit sites like Reddit or Know Your Meme to find appropriate visuals to share with your followers.
- When you see a new meme popping up, try to think about ways you can revise it so it fits your business or industry. Sesame Street is actually really good about this. When everyone started creating their own “Call Me Maybe” videos last year, they created a spoof video where Cookie Monster sings, “You have cookie, share it maybe?”
- Ask your followers to get creative. Host a contest where you ask your social media followers to create a meme that’s a good fit for your industry, and then reward the person that wins with a certain product or service from your business.
