If it’s been a while since you’ve taken a look at your business’ marketing strategy, fall is a great time to review it. Part of any good content marketing strategy for business these days is content curation. It is a hot topic that every business is trying to implement.
So, what is content curation? It is the art of finding, selecting and sharing the best and most relevant content with your community that’s related to a particular theme or topic. Content curation is a subset of content marketing. It is not about collecting links or being an information whiz, rather it’s about putting that information into relatable context. The goal of content curation is to enhance and add value to your existing content resources, in order to best tell your brands story. Here are a few tips to set you on the right track.
1. Identify Your Topics – The first thing to do when starting content curation for your business is to hone in on the topics you’d like to focus on. Think about the industry you are in and what might interest your readers. Be careful not to define your topics too narrowly. This could lead to your information only hitting the mark with a handful of people. On the opposite end, if you define your topics too broadly, you may find that it won’t meet your reader’s needs because they won’t know what to expect from your social media channels. Try and stay in the middle to attract and maintain a loyal readership that will engage with your business’ brand.
2. Follow a Schedule – Your readers expect consistency and regularity, so make sure to give it to them. Post blogs and social media updates at the same time and on the same days each week. This will also help bring new users to your site, help grow a loyal fan base and increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
3. Share, But Don’t Steal – It can be easy to surf the Internet, pick things you like and make them your own. However, remember if you are using someone’s work in your blog, or using a fact without crediting or linking back to the source, you are stealing. Make sure to give attribution, link back and credit the work you are using. Sharing within the online community works because it provides value and endorses the writers who have created the content.
4. Retitle Everything You Curate – When you curate content, make sure that you don’t use the same headline/title as the original piece of content. If you do, you are essentially competing with the original author in SEO results. It’s important to rename your work so it will stand out from the rest. By using a new headline/title you will also be giving your blog post a fresh view on the topic and it will brand it in your own voice.
Finally, remember that drawing from a broad mix of social media content such as videos, articles, infographics, memes and photos will add a richness and depth to your content marketing.
