Your company may not be using social media properly.

We’ve all heard it over and over again: social media is important to your brand’s marketing strategy. So, you’ve decided to jump on the social media bandwagon and implement as many social media aspects into your business’ marketing strategy as possible. However, it hasn’t worked. Your brand’s numbers are still low and you’re not seeing results. According to Entrepreneur Marketing. Net, 34% of small businesses have seen returns on their social media investment, while 61% of businesses have not seen any return on their investment. So you think to yourself, “I knew this social media stuff was all hype.”

Well, that’s where you’re wrong. Social media is an important tool. It can improve a business’ ROI, enhance your business’ online reputation and build a strong community around your brand. The fact is, the problem isn’t that social media doesn’t work, or that it only works for big businesses; it’s that your business may not be using social media properly. It will help to start thinking about using social media in terms of doing more with less effort. Work smarter, not harder. Here are a few tips to get payback for time spent on social media doing things you’re already do, just doing them better.

1. Social Media Isn’t Easy – Believe it or not social media is a full-time job. Many small businesses don’t take social media seriously. They try to take it on as one of the many tasks on their to-do list and end up realizing that they are struggling to stay on top of it. If you really want to generate and nurture possible leads through social media, do yourself a favor and dedicate someone to the job.

2. Don’t Assume Your Audience Is All The Same – I can’t emphasize enough how the audience on Twitter is different from the audience on Facebook or Google+. When addressing an audience on a social media platform, you need to make sure you are writing to them, not just writing one update and posting the same thing on 3 different social media platforms. It is important to change up the writing and know whom you are trying to address. Think of each social media platform as a one-on-one conversation with a different person. In real-life you wouldn’t tell Jack the same story the exact same way  you might tell Jill, right? So when you’re writing your updates make sure to change them up so that they’re appropriate for each specific platform.

3. Keep Up To Date On Your Industry News – Staying current with what’s happening in your industry can seem overwhelming, but it’s important information you need to know. Most customers/clients these days learn as much about a product or solution as possible before forming an opinion or making a decision to buy. If your business is not keeping up on what’s happening and not relaying that information to them, you risk becoming irrelevant. Make sure to monitor your industry’s news. Subscribe to a few blogs or use a tool such as Feedly or Google Alerts that allow you to scan the day’s content all in one place.

4. Your Brand Isn’t Human Enough – Social media is about people and relationships. When brands fail to develop their own personality on a platform they tend to be ignored. Make sure your posts don’t sound robotic or redundant.

Finally, maybe you aren’t creating your own content and you should be. People come to your site and look for your services because you are the expert. If you are constantly just posting links to your sales & promotions and not creating your own helpful and informative content, people will start wondering if you really are an expert.
