With a certain holiday coming up this Thursday, a lot of people are turning their minds to thoughts of family, friends and a delicious Thanksgiving feast. This got me thinking about how public relations is a lot like turkey day.
How Public Relations is Like a Thanksgiving Feast
- A Thanksgiving feast doesn’t come together on its own, just like a successful public relations strategy doesn’t happen on its own, either. Both require a lot of preparation, whether it’s menu planning, grocery shopping and inviting guests or creating a marketing plan, building a professional website and taking high-resolution, professional photos of your products.
- A slow and steady approach is the best tactic for both public relations and your Thanksgiving feast. Preparing food takes hours, working little by little to make sure each dish is prepared correctly and in the right order. In the same way, your marketing plan needs to be approached one step at a time. Doing a little bit every day will be much more effective in the long run than trying to squeeze all your activities into a five-hour chunk every other week.
- If you’re simply attending a Thanksgiving feast, you probably know a lot happens behind the scenes to create a delicious meal. In the same way, there’s a lot that goes into that magazine article about your competitor or your business partner’s Facebook page. Those results don’t just happen on their own. Although no one else may see it, what you do behind closed doors will make a huge difference.
- Sometimes, despite the best laid plans, you need to be flexible. If you’re hosting a Thanksgiving feast and guests don’t end up coming, or a dish doesn’t turn out the way you expect, you just need to go with it. In the same way, as you follow your marketing plan, sometimes the tactics you take won’t have the expected result and you just need to stay flexible. Of course, you can always learn from the unexpected and improve your marketing plan in the future, but in the moment you need to do the best you can and see what happens.
As you think about your public relations efforts and marketing plan for this next year, remember that it will take time, energy and dedication, just like preparing a Thanksgiving feast does.
