I love to make lists! It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of public relations pros do. In fact, I recently switched my to-do list back to a paper planner and started color coding with Post-Its and blue, yellow, orange and green highlighters. Needless to say, I’m a happy camper! But as someone that enjoys making lists, it’s important for me to remember that every single task I add needs to have a specific purpose.
This brings me to my point: Does everything you spend your valuable public relations time doing serve a purpose in you overall marketing plan?
Marketing Plan Tips: Making Your Public Relations Time Count
Completing individual public relations tasks is a waste of your valuable time if they aren’t part of the plan. You might write an amazing blog post or have the best website ever, but if these aren’t pieces of your overall marketing strategy, your efforts are wasted.
How can you make your public relations time count? As we all know, small business owners are short on time, so here are some quick tips to keep in mind:
- Create a marketing plan and stick to it! Every 6-12 months, write down a list of measurable goals and figure out how you plan to achieve them. This is the basic structure of your marketing plan! Then, write out exactly what you’ll do each month so you know where your focus should be. For example, you can spend the first month making sure your website copy is as clean and crisp as it can be. Then, the second month, start blogging at least once a week to try to start driving traffic to your website. Make sure you re-evaluate your marketing strategies regularly too. You want to give them enough time to work, but you don’t want to keep your focus somewhere it’s not doing anything.
- Keep your marketing strategies in mind. Before you add an item to your to-do list, think about how it will help you accomplish your marketing strategies and goals.
- Prioritize! Whether you color code with highlighters, number tasks on your list or use another system, make sure you’re thinking about how you’ll move through your list during the day. In addition to the most urgent tasks, you want to have time for activities that take more time and focus, too.
- Stay flexible. Life happens. Things will always come up. When something begs for your attention, consider whether it really needs to be done right away or if it can wait until you finish the next couple of items on your list. Are you a list builder too?
Staying on track with your marketing strategies can be difficult, but it’s vital to your company’s public relations success! What strategies do you use to make sure you stay on track? Are you a list builder too?
