Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are changing the way businesses interact with customers. The way you conduct yourself through those social media accounts are a direct reflection on your business. And while digital etiquette might sound like a stuffy practice, good social media manners online count. Here are four digital etiquette tips to keep in mind when posting on your social media marketing networks so you can stay proper while building your brand.
1. Restrain From Pitching – Social media is meant for you to engage people through your business. You should talk to them, listen twice as much as you post and market your brand half as much as you think you should. It might be tempting to respond to every comment with a pitch about how good your business is, but good digital etiquette dictates that you should restrain yourself from pitching. When you stop pitching, your fans/followers will have more opportunity to engage with your message and will want to learn more about your company.
2. Be Nice – What you do on the Internet is a reflection of you and your brand. Be positive and encouraging, and stay away from negative comments or rants about how much you dislike your competition. No one wants to be associated with a negative business brand.
3. Compose and Edit – Here at Three Girls Media we compose our updates in a Microsft Word document before posting them onto social media networks. By drafting updates in a Word document first, you give yourself the opportunity to double check for grammar and spelling mistakes. This also gives you the opportunity to have all your content in one place so you can organize your social media management plan more easily.
4. Schedule Wisely – You may have 10 killer new updates you want to post on your social media networks, but posting them back-to-back is not a good idea. Spacing out your posts is very important and proper etiquette. No one wants their newsfeed bombarded with dozens of posts from the same person all in a row. Instead, think about what times would be best for your content to go out. Check your analytics, locations of your target audience and your time zone, then space out your posts to reach the highest number of people possible.
While social media continues to change and grow, digital etiquette on how you use these tools shouldn’t. Remember, sticking to some of these tips will not only help get your businesses message across, but also help keep your followers wanting to keep coming back to your business for more.
