Recently I’ve been trying to expand my culinary repertoire. I am not very good or creative yet, but I feel it will come with time. This venture to be a foodie extraordinaire has led me to find that SEO is a lot like cooking, and trying to rank high on Google is your cooking competition. Any given food competition will have a theme, like making a meal containing all things bacon. The challenge is the equivalent to the topic of your page. Your competition dish is your content, and your rivals in the challenge are your real-life business competitors offering up similar content.
The goal is to get first in the competition or rank high on a Google search where the judge
is Google’s algorithm and the audience is your website viewers. Winning the competition means cooking up the best dish to win over the judges AND the audience, or the Google algorithm and your website viewers.
4 Tips to Win the Google Competition and SEO
1. Relevance and Originality: Creating good content means having a product that meets the requirements of the competition but are still unique. If you are in an all bacon competition, you better make sure there is bacon in your dishes! At the same time though, cooking up bacon and eggs probably won’t make you stand out enough to win the competition. Webpage content should be relevant to fit the topic, but also original so that it stands out among content already on the web.
2. Be Audience Focused: Yes, the judges will set guidelines for how they score your food, but how the audience votes also plays a role in who wins. The audience votes through link sharing and page views—the more you receive the higher your page will rank.
3. Use the Right Ingredients: A key component to SEO is using the right keywords that are the ingredients in your dish. Too much of one ingredient can spoil the flavor of your food, but at the same time, a lack of an ingredient can make your dish bland. Getting on the first page of Google takes a balance of the right keywords.
4. Make it Appetizing: Your bacon dish may be the best tasting thing in the world, but if it doesn’t look good, people won’t want to eat it. The same goes with your webpage. If your site isn’t visually pleasing or easy to navigate, people will be deterred and won’t want to read your content.
If you spend time watching the Food Network, you’ll see that it’s not just the professionals that win the competitions. Anyone has the potential to make the winning dish and succeed at SEO. What’s your secret ingredient to winning at SEO? Share in the comments below!
