Hyperlinks are an easy way to drive traffic to your website or social media platform

The hyperlink is a potential boon for business.  These blue underlined words carry a lot of weight with search engines.  The trick is to use hyperlinks effectively to maximize traffic to your website or social media platform.  With that in mind, here are three basic tips to get you started.

How to Hyperlink Content

1.  Hyperlink the Right Word

There’s a lot of temptation to just hyperlink any word.  This is a poor strategy.  Why?  The word(s) you choose are searchable in Google, Yahoo and other search engines.  You want to pick popular words for your topic.  Need an example?  Say you’re the owner of a pet store and you’re writing a blog post or social media update about different kinds of cat food.  You’d want to hyperlink “cat food” or “cat food reviews” instead of something generic like “the” or “different.”

2.  Hyperlink Credible Information from Reliable Websites

Hyperlinks are a great way to add information about a topic.  Remember, readers are consumers; they are seeking reliable information to help them make a good choice. Hyperlinking questionable material is a good way to drive away business.  You didn’t create the content, but you helped spread the message.  Let’s revisit the pet store example.  Would you hyperlink information from the American Humane Society or from a blog operated by a man with 12 cats?  Sometimes the distinctions aren’t so obvious.  What about the ASPCA or PETA?  The choice you make reflects on you and the impression people take away.

3.  Hyperlink Locally

I’ll start this point with a caveat.  Make sure to follow tip number two before using number three.  Hyperlinking a local business is a smart way to connect neighbors to your blog or social media platform.  Think of the hyperlink as a business card.  You’re essentially saying you trust and value this person and their business.  A pet store owner would be wise to hyperlink information from a local veterinarian or animal shelter.  This is relationship building.  You never know, at some point that vet may send people your way to get food or supplies.

There’s a lot more to the world of hyperlinks.  However, these three tips provide a good outline for using them effectively in your blogs and social media.  So, get writing and growing your business.
