Ever since February, I have been spending nearly every weekend at my boyfriend’s cabin remodeling. When a pipe burst on Valentine’s Day weekend, a $12,000 insurance claim quickly turned into a complete remodeling of the entire cabin, including new windows, doors, flooring, drywall, decks, interior and exterior paint, landscaping and quilts. While the process has been incredibly overwhelming, exhausting, and testing of my boyfriend and my relationship, I’m so excited for when the day comes that we can simply go to the cabin and enjoy it.
I also, like any public relations specialist, have taken the idea of remodeling and applied it to my Monday-Friday job.
3 Lessons Remodeling Has Taught Me About Social Media
1. There’s Always More You Can Do
When it comes to remodeling, it appears that the job is never quite complete. There’s always a little adjustment that can be made or perfected and another decorative pillow to spruce up old furniture. The same concept can easily be applied to public relations. Your marketing strategy will never be completely done; in fact, a proper public relations strategy will always require a little attention and adjustment.
2. Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize
My boyfriend quickly got enveloped in all the possibilities of things he could do to the cabin and a new bathroom escalated to an entire house in a matter of weeks. In public relations, there is always an opportunity to pursue, but it’s important to prioritize and focus on what needs to be accomplished. By doing this you can give your all to one task instead of delegating a million different jobs.
3. Communication is Everything
Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I have had bad luck when it comes to communication with our contractors. They say they will call but don’t, they tell us they completed a job but didn’t and they randomly show up when it’s convenient for them instead of working with our schedule. When it comes to public relations, communication must be constant and clear so that everyone on the team knows what is happening and when.
