I never thought I would spend 11 days in Minot, North Dakota at the North Dakota State Fair.
As a social media specialist, the act of joining the circus to work with kids for a short time isn’t something that appears on our to-do lists very often. But when I was presented with the opportunity to go on tour with a children’s theater company that I used to work for, I couldn’t pass it up.
So here I am in Minot, North Dakota.
In between the shows I’m performing, I started thinking about the similarities between my job in social media management and as an actor. Because I am doing a children’s show, I’ve learned a lot about marketing to a specific target audience.
3 Ways to Truly Grab the Attention of Your Target Audience
1. Actually talk to them.
As I’m wandering around the fairgrounds in search of kids to be in my show, I often run into the problem of parents saying, “I don’t think so.” More often than not, I have to stop myself from saying, “I wasn’t talking to you.” To avoid this problem, I turn my attention directly to the kids and without really caring what their parents facial expressions are, I ask them specifically if they want to be part of something fun.
2. Speak their language.
At the fair, parents love the word free. Kids couldn’t honestly care less. When I’m getting the kids ready for the show, I use language that I know will get them excited. I change my behavior based on which age group I’m currently talking to. For example, I have kids of all ages in my show, but I’m not going to talk to the 14-year old the same way I talk to the 3-year-old. Practice this same concept in your social media management and breakdown the groups within your overall target audience. Know which words will trigger what members.
3. Break out of your comfort zone.
Did I mention that I’m wandering the fairgrounds dressed as a flight attendant? I’m going up to complete strangers and convincing them to be in my show. I’m marketing to them and I’m selling an experience. Getting out there is extremely discomforting and I’m always a bit hesitant about what I’ll say or how I will act. I wouldn’t get anybody to participate if I just stayed on the stage and simply waited for them to show up. The same idea is prevalent in your social media management. You cannot simply just wait for followers and likes to show up; you have to go get them yourself.
