This past weekend I took part in the first clam dig of the season. My dad and I went down to Pacific Beach near Ocean Shores to participate in the much anticipated events. During this two day, rain filled adventure, I not only learned how to find and hunt for clams, but also lessons that can be transferred into social media campaigns.
3 Social Media Lessons Learned from Clam Digging
- Know What To Look For
If you’re just starting out at clam digging it may seem like all you’re doing is looking at the sand for no reason. It can be really frustrating to look at the sand and see other people digging up clams, but you aren’t. When you finally see what everyone else sees, the little imperfections in the sand that let you know there’s a clam down there, the fun begins. This is the same for social media campaigns when you are looking for content to put on the different social media platforms. You may be looking at all kinds of content not knowing what is good, but when you begin to find content that works for your business, don’t lose sight of it.
- Pay Attention to Your Surroundings
One of the major lessons you learn when on the beach is to never turn your back on the ocean. This is why it is important to know your surroundings; anything could happen in a split second. When creating marketing campaigns, especially when you are a small business starting out, you need to know what is going on around you. Pay attention to what similar businesses are doing and how they’re promoting themselves. Note how their actions are either successes or failures.
- Hold on For the Ride
In my case, holding on for the ride meant digging my clam gun into the ground and hoping the waves didn’t knock me over in the pitch black. While digging in the dark was still fun, it definitely had more hurdles than on a bright sunny day. Same as with a nighttime clam dig, when you’re beginning a new marketing campaign, it’s going to take time. You can’t always expect instant mega results the hour after you launch your efforts. Let your hard work speak for itself and give it time to shine.
