Warning: Contains Spoilers
I don’t see a lot of box-office hits in movie theaters, but last week I went and saw The Maze Runner. I hadn’t had a chance to read the book, but once the film was over, I knew this book was the next on my list. The movie had all of the elements of a great story: suspense, drama, nonstop action and a cliffhanger ending! All of these elements are great for public relations campaigns, especially social media marketing.
The story centers on a group of boys who are inexplicably trapped in the idyllic center of an enormous maze that opens each day and closes each night. It is filled with dangers and none of the characters knows why or how they got there. The main character, Thomas, drives the story with his arrival by shaking things up and entering the maze. Here are 3 social media marketing lessons I learned from watching The Maze Runner.
3 Social Media Marketing Lessons from The Maze Runner
- Tease Your Audience
Creator James Dashner launched several social media profiles months before the movie’s debut, where he posted teasers and facts, generating hype. By incorporating the book’s existing fans, he created a large enough social buzz that when the movie premiered, it made over $3 million in one weekend and banked over 100,000 movie-related tweets each week. Incorporate elements into your social media marketing campaign to entice your audience and get them involved in product launches or big news.
- Lead, Don’t Follow
In the social world, you want to be a leader of the pack who comes out with new and fresh information. Start new trends and social conversations. In The Maze Runner, character Thomas questioned all the rules and went out into the maze when everyone else told him not to because he wanted to see his world change. By becoming the leader of social opinion, the conversation around you will begin changing.
- To Grow You Must Take Risks
In order to move forward with your campaign, there may come a time when you need to take calculated risks. Don’t be afraid to take a leap when implementing new goals or marketing techniques. If none of the characters in The Maze Runner had been willing to risk their lives, they never would have made it out alive. Integrate this spirit into your next social media marketing campaign.
