There’s a lot you can learn about managing your company’s social media accounts in a place that’s often overlooked: the people around you. This shouldn’t be surprising – after all, the first word in “social media” is social!
In the past I’ve shared lessons I’ve learned from my daughter, parents and brother, but there’s another person that’s reminded me of valuable social media marketing lessons: my husband, Matt.
4 Social Media Marketing Lessons
1. Be funny. One of the many things I love about Matt is his sense of humor. Laughing is good for you; it makes things more memorable and inspires you to share with others. The same principle is true of social media. When something makes you laugh, don’t you want to pass it along? By sharing funny pictures or entertaining videos, your followers are more likely to share it with their friends.
2. Remember context. As important as humor is, it’s important to consider the circumstances. I know Matt well enough that I can often tell when something funny runs through his head that isn’t appropriate for the situation. Remember that social media marketing is about establishing a connection between your business and your followers, so make sure anything you post somehow fits within the context of your company.
3. Get counsel. There have been numerous times in our marriage when we haven’t been sure how to proceed. From having a baby and buying a house to figuring out a budget and everything else in between, it’s hard to know where to start. One thing I always appreciate about Matt is that he’s never afraid to ask people he trusts for advice. This is a great approach for social media marketing as well. Read articles on websites you trust (PR Daily is a fantastic resource) or take advantage of free consultations from firms like ours that are happy to share some ideas. There’s a lot of information that can be overwhelming, so don’t be afraid to ask for help!
4. Be attentive to your audience. When you’re dating it seems easy to pay attention to your significant other, but as time goes on and other distractions crop up it takes more energy. I am impressed by how attentive Matt is to continuing to learn about me by paying attention to things I say or ways I react. Similarly, there are a lot of ways you can learn about your social media audience. Of course, asking questions or doing polls and surveys once in a while can be helpful, but also pay attention to posts they “like,” comment on and share with their friends. There’s a lot you can learn if you stay attentive to your followers!
Remember, social media is all about people, so think about your friends and family. Are there any social media marketing lessons you can learn from them? Share in the comments below!
