Unfortunately, even in 2015, I do not have the luxury of an automatic dish washer; fortunately, however, standing over a sink has taught me lessons in social media. It may seem odd to find lessons from such a mundane activity, but taking care of each dish is like managing a social media account.
3 Social Media Management Lessons from Hand Washing Dishes
- Be Consistent
Not having a dish washer means it’s a lot more work if you wait until your last cup and fork are gone before you wash them. Getting on a consistent schedule for washing dishes, whether it’s after every use or at the end of the day, can save you from having to do too much at once. The same is true of social media; getting on a regular posting schedule can help your business and followers. Try posting once or twice a day to maintain a schedule that can be easily followed instead of posting a week’s worth of content at once; you don’t want to overwhelm a newsfeed.
- Be Thorough
There is absolutely no point in rushing through doing dishes when you are hand washing them. Trying to speed through the process can lead to bowls and spoons that still have food on them and may require you to wash them all over again. Taking your time goes for posting on social media accounts as well. Don’t be in so much of a rush to post something that you don’t notice errors. Take the time to read and double check your content just to be sure the grammar is right and nothing is spelled incorrectly before you hit send. While these mistakes can be innocent enough, they can reflect poorly on your brand.
- Make it Fun
Though I find myself washing dishes almost every day, that doesn’t mean it always has to feel like a burden. Simple things I do to make the job more enjoyable are listening to music, bringing in my laptop to listen to my favorite TV show and buying fancy cleaning gloves to class up the process. By simply adding visuals and videos to your social media page, you are adding an element that is irresistible to your fans. Posts that include memes or infographics are much more likely to receive engagement than ones that include only text.
Hand washing dishes is a chore that I wish I didn’t have to do so often, but it does have similar elements to a social media campaign. Like washing every cup and fork you use during the day, be consistent, thorough and make your social media accounts fun! Have you ever found inspiration from household chores?
