Twitter is a great social media marketing tool that allows individuals and businesses to reach a vast audience online. In addition to knowing how to create great posts that get people talking, it also can benefit you to know what Twitter sets limits on, and how they affect your company. Here is a guide to Twitter limits and their meanings.
[Social Media Marketing] Understanding Twitter Limits
- Follower Limits: To combat spammers on Twitter, an account is only allowed to follow 2,000 people, then a “small percentage” more than the number of followers they have beyond that. This is dictated by Twitter and according to them, every user’s percentage is different. If you’re struggling to get people to follow you and can’t follow more than 2,000 people, consider picking and choosing the accounts you really want updates from. This can make your profile look more trustworthy.
- Tweet Limits: Another spam prevention tactic is a limit on the number of tweets; an account can only tweet 1,000 times each day. However, we don’t recommend sending anywhere close to that amount for your social media marketing!
- API Limits: API calls are limited by Twitter to 100 every hour. This means every click or view that requires you to communicate with the platform for data counts as one of the API calls. Certain tasks like refreshing the page or viewing direct messages, tweets, replies or feeds count as more than one call and can add up quickly. A simple way to combat this is to only use Twitter from one browser and avoid refreshing too often.
- Direct Message Limits: Users can send up to 250 direct messages each day.
- Changes to Direct Message Character Limits: Twitter users will enjoy that the company recently announced removing the 140-character limit on direct messages. Starting in July, user-to-user chats will be able to support up to 10,000 characters, a huge change from before.
These Twitter limits are important to know if you’re using the platform as part of your social media marketing plan. As social platforms grow and change, we’d love to help you stay up to date! Contact us today for assistance.
