Last week, a good friend stayed at my house for a few days while he was in town. Having a houseguest means you clean your home and organize a bit more than usual, but I don’t normally associate marketing lessons with having company stay over. Tidying my home to prepare for a friend left me thinking a lot about public relations, because there were quite a few similarities with my daily work activities. Here are three marketing lessons from having a houseguest spend the weekend.
3 Marketing Lessons from Having a Houseguest
- Take a Look at Your Footprint
Does your home look messy or just lived in? Before you begin to clean and prepare, take a good look around you and make sure the basics are under control. Are the laundry and dishes put away? Do all major appliances work? Once you have control of large projects, the rest should fall into place.
Public relations and marketing campaigns are the same way. It’s important to check your company’s online footprint and make sure all social media profiles and website information is filled out before you begin to promote products or services.
- Get Organized
In an initial cleaning sweep of my house, I organized small items and made sure everything was in its place. Before you begin to promote a product or service, make sure you know all the important details, usernames and passwords, social profiles and other relevant information. You’ll want to be well-informed before you reach out to the public.
- Coordinate Your Plan
When company is headed to your home, you’ll want to plan what time they’ll arrive and arrange any transportation from the airport. If your guest is driving in, make sure to firm up the plan so they don’t arrive when you’re in the middle of cleaning; this is one of the marketing lessons you can apply. For example, if your company has multiple marketers in charge of social media, make sure you coordinate the plan each day so you aren’t posting conflicting content and are maintaining good search engine optimization.
Looking at your online footprint, getting organized from the inside out and coordinating your plan with others are all marketing lessons I learned from preparing to have a houseguest. For more marketing tips, read additional articles on our blog today.
