A few weeks ago, during Three Girls’ staff retreat, one of our activities was going to a store in Olympia to paint pottery. After picking up my new platter this week, I started thinking about ways the activity was similar to public relations. Here are 3 tips I pulled from the experience.
3 Public Relations Tips from Painting a Platter
1. Get advice. Before any of us started painting our various creations (our team selected everything from mugs and a teapot to an elephant and a box), we listened to the staff for their insight. They recommended the number of coats to use on our creations, directed us towards various tools and more. Before you start your public relations campaign, it’s always a good idea to ask for advice, whether that means reading helpful blog posts or talking to an expert.
2. Plan ahead. Before any of us started painting, we thought about what we wanted our finished product to look like and what colors and tools we would need. In public relations, it’s important to come up with a plan before setting it into motion. Knowing how you plan to approach PR for your business will help you see what direction to proceed.
3. Be creative. One of the really fun parts about painting all together as a team was seeing how everyone used their creativity and various skill levels to create widely different designs! A couple of people chose to come up with freehand designs to create polka dots and flowers whereas I relied on stencils to include a duck and an umbrella on my platter. Make sure you infuse your public relations campaign with creativity, too! Think about ways you can use various tools to help you approach your audience with a fresh angle or creative elements you can include within the structure of your PR campaign.
