This past weekend I spent my time doing something I almost never do: I read a book. An actual book with pages in a hard back cover! What got me so excited to read? Mindy Kaling released her second book, Why Not Me. I eagerly anticipated my Amazon package and couldn’t wait to crack it open. After finishing her latest literary work, I couldn’t help but noting that the book displayed many social media marketing tools we use every day.
3 Lessons in Social Media Marketing from “Why Not Me.”
- Use Images
Using images on social media cannot be stressed enough! It doesn’t matter if they are simple or complicated pictures, they just need to be there. In Mindy’s book, she used images to help create a better visual and understanding of an event, person or moment in her life. My favorite image she included was her shaking the hand of President Barack Obama while attending a state dinner. Including images not only can make a connection between text and understanding, but also lead to shares on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
- Share Your Thought Process
Like most people, I first became aware of Mindy Kaling while she was on The Office. Since then, I have followed her from playing Kelly Kapoor and her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), to her latest television gig on The Mindy Project. As a result of my interest in her I enjoyed her different essays on her thought process and how she handles different situations. When people become a fan of your product or service, they want to know more about you and your company. Consider holding a Q&A on YouTube or set up a video conference so you can strengthen your connection with your fans and patrons and build an unbreakable bond.
- Provide Helpful Information
Whether she was listing off Hollywood beauty secrets or giving tips on how to make it in your career, her advice could be applied to just about anyone and anything. If you find your customers asking you the same questions over and over again, use that as an opportunity to write a blog post about that subject. It may seem like you’re giving away too much, but customers will appreciate the help and keep going back to your site for more. It never hurts to offer friendly and helpful advice.
After reading Why Not Me I instantly found myself wanting to read it again and even thought about giving this reading thing a try more often. From this book I found three social media marketing lessons: use images, share your thought process and provide helpful information. What other books have you learned social media marketing lessons from?
