By now you know that I am a football fan and a diehard Seahawks fan, and while you are probably thinking, “What more could this girl possibly have to say about that?” I have one last run left in me. My Seahawks are Super Bowl XLVIII Champions and that deserves some blogging love. The 12th man celebrated with the team during a parade in downtown Seattle, and with over a half a million people flooding the streets for a chance to catch a glimpse of the hometown heroes, this is a moment that we all can learn from. In this blog post, I introduce three tips for social media or public relations success based on my own experiences at the Seattle Seahawks celebration parade.
1. It may have been a team effort, but don’t forget to give recognition where recognition is due: Football is a team sport and the game can’t be won by one single player; however, recognizing the hard work and efforts of individuals will undoubtedly boost morale all around. Take the example of the Seahawks to heart. During the celebration, they not only recognized each player individually, but they also recognized the relationship they have with their fans, making each of us feel as though we were a key element to success. Remember a little love and appreciation will go a long way! Social media is a great platform for this.
2. If you have a positive relationship with your fans, nothing is impossible: Seattle is a city with over 600,000 people living within its limits, but at the victory parade this past week, over 700,000 fans flooded the streets. This may sound simple, but it is essential to remember that your target demographics have the potential to lift you, your brand and your product to heights you have never experienced before. Be sure to maintain a constantly positive relationship with your fans and followers; it will make all the difference with building team loyalty.
3. Don’t be afraid to be the underdog; you are more powerful than you know: There is no doubt that the Seattle Seahawks have been fighting for the chance to be taken seriously as a franchise since inception. This team in particular was given an F grade by analysts claiming that players weren’t good enough to make any sort of impact on the sport of football. Well, I guess we proved them wrong because the ragtag group of athletes not only impacted the sport, but left a permanent mark on its history. This group overcame the odds, started from the bottom and made it out on top; don’t be afraid to do the same in your own marketing, social media or business efforts. Keep in mind that there will always be nay sayers and there will always be skeptics, but with a strong focus on your goals and a focused strategy for success, you can achieve any goals you may have.
The Seahawks have an unparalleled fan base and the last few weeks have left the 12th man smiling from ear to ear. The arena may be different than that of a small business, but the foundation remains the same.
