I’ll admit it: I’m a rom-com junkie. I’m a sucker for the girly breakdowns, the cute guy running after a taxi in the middle of NYC and the kiss at the end that makes it all worth it. It’s cheesy, awesome and let’s just say it: pretty unrealistic. But there are plenty of lessons that can be learned from these guilty pleasures; not just about yourself and your present (or potential) significant other, but also about those lovely Twitter followers you cherish so dearly. But just in case you are on some crazy mission to see how many Twitter followers you can set free (enter Andie Anderson from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with chick-flick stud muffin Matthew McConaughey), here are four ways to do so.
1. Only talking about yourself.
Just like dating, being in a relationship with your Twitter followers means sometimes making it about them. Talking about yourself all the time (AKA being 100% self-promotional) puts a real damper on chemistry and a unique conversation between you and your customers. Take the time to talk about the industry, spotlight your followers, or post something clever or funny that has nothing to do with you or your business. People want to communicate with well-rounded people; one-dimensional personalities are extremely boring.
2. Never responding to comments/questions/new follows.
In every romantic comedy there is always a misunderstanding of communication. All of a sudden one person stops answering calls or texts and all hell breaks loose. While I don’t expect that your customers will have a complete meltdown when you don’t respond, you can definitely expect them not to stick around. Try and respond in a timely fashion, usually within 24 hours, with an actual response and not an automated one. You (and/or your business) did not jump on different social media platforms as a robot; you joined it to connect and have a conversation with your Twitter followers and potential customers.
3. Posting the same content on all social media platforms.
While so many rom-com girls (and guys) are the same, don’t become like them. Make sure to tweak your content for each platform and be unique and clever. Posting what everyone else is writing or laughing about will not make you the “go-to” social media profile for new Twitter followers. The last thing anyone wants is to be in a relationship with a robot.
4. Posting boring content without images.
Being visual is a must for all social media platforms. Posting boring text-only content is a good way to get lost in the feeds. Get a little controversial and creative to spark engagement and conversation. After all, that is what social media platforms are for…
While I encourage you not to try and lose Twitter followers (or followers on any of the social media platforms), keep these rules in mind when posting content. Even though it all ended well for Ms. Anderson, it was just a movie.
