I don’t know about you, but I am OBSESSED with The Voice on NBC! This week was the first live show of the season and the talent this year is incredible. While I was watching each of the top 12 hit notes I’ve only dreamt of, I began thinking about how we could learn from this massively successful singing competition. In this blog post, I identify three lessons that can be derived from this week’s episode of The Voice.
Three Social Media Lessons from The Voice:
1. Just go with it: This week, one of the singers on team Shakira had their mic go out halfway through her performance. This singer didn’t let an obvious change in plans alter how she performed and was actually praised for her professionalism and poise throughout the mishap. Social media is just as unpredictable as a live performance and things are bound to surprise you. If (and when) disaster hits, staying calm and composed will serve you well.
2. Sometimes your competition will win: This week the show lost two amazing singers and one of them was a complete shock! The Voice uses something called the Twitter instant save and allows America to decide which of the lowest scoring singers to save. Sometimes our competitors come out on top and we have to deal with it in the best way we can. In social media this is bound to happen frequently. Your rival brand might debut a killer outbound message campaign, but instead of resenting their success, try learning from their best practices to create an even more successful future campaign of your own.
3. Allow mentorship & advice: What I love about The Voice is the mentorship that each coach offers their team members. Whether it be Blake Shelton offering advice to singers or a publicist offering social media advice to a small business, mentorship is what strengthens foundations. Always be willing to make changes and take advice from those who have found success in your desired area of interest.
