I think most people like imagining what the future will look like. If you are a design nerd like me, that doesn’t necessarily mean hover boards like Marty McFly* flew, but instead dreaming about how the web will look in maybe just a few years’ time. Since almost all businesses are online these days, web design changes will impact the way your business functions.
3 ways web design might change in the future:
- Responsive Design: Businesses will need to be able to reach their target users wherever they are and on whatever device they are using. Many websites have
begun to use Responsive Web Design (RWD) which allows websites to be optimized throughout screen sizes (small mobile devices, tablets and large desktops). RWD will allow for no distinction between mobile and web design, meaning your business website will be a multi-platform product.
- Minimalism Will Rule: The generalized design principle of the web will focus on simple and clear layouts with a greater focus on typography and less on decoration. The idea behind this is to throw away what is unnecessary in order to focus on quality content. You can expect to see single color icons, single page layouts, text-based navigation, and lots of empty space. Typography will be the future key design element as brands establish signature fonts.
- Consumers Driving Content: Instead of giving users content you assume they need, the technology will evolve enough that users will be able to request the content they want. The interfaces of the operating systems will all look similar, but algorithms will be put into place to make personalized content and data. These algorithms will be behavior-driven based on a diverse data set such as location and social history.
Web design has already changed drastically since its invention (imagine the graphics on your first computer!), and will continue to change with time. Inevitably these changes will affect how your business functions—hopefully for the best! What do you think about future web design? Do you have any predictions of what is to come? Share below!
*Hover boards like created for the movie Back to the Future are awesome, and I do hope they show up in the future–along with great web design!
