Nutella is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. While I once hated the hazelnut spread (I know… blasphemy), I quickly grew to love it and confess to minor freak-outs whenever it appears in my pantry.
But what does a love of Nutella have to do with social media marketing?
When Nutella received notice of World Nutella Day in 2013, they weren’t happy. They ordered a cease and desist for the website and asked that fans stop spreading the love through social media. While normally any brand would be honored that their fans devote a day in their honor, Nutella brushed it off. It wasn’t until later that Nutella gave in and said thank you to fans for being so loyal to a hazelnut and chocolate combination of goodness.
If you’re a fan of the hazelnut spread and have taken part in the celebration of World Nutella Day, you’ve also taken notice of Nutella’s knack for social media marketing in the last 50 years.
3 Social Media Marketing Lessons from Nutella
1. It’s about people.
In honor of 50 years, Nutella has released its, “50 Years Full of Stories,” campaign asking fans to share memories they’ve enjoyed while snacking on the hazelnut chocolate treat via text, email or video to win prizes. By doing this, Nutella is making a genuine effort to give their fans the chance to spread the love. You don’t have to buy Nutella to be part of this experience, and that is what makes Nutella’s social media marketing strategy brilliant. It’s important to get people talking, sharing and proving their loyalty to a product.
2. There’s more than one way to do things.
Nutella can be used in so many recipes! Whether it be in crepes, sandwiches, crackers or for dipping apples, Nutella is an extremely diverse product that can be enjoyed numerous amounts of ways. Apply this concept to your product or business and really explore what it is that your product or service can do to help people enjoy it more.
3. Get visual.
The hazelnut chocolate spread is all about the visual aids. They understand that video and photos will get moved around so much faster than text. Nutella’s tumblr is fantastic and they are active on Facebook and Pinterest. By being creative and developing pristine content, the mere image of Nutella makes people happy. Don’t be afraid to use images to reach your audience. Give them something to share!
