In this day and age, most people have heard of social media and have some sort of preconceived notion of what it is. After all, who hasn’t heard of Facebook? Still, when it comes to using various social media sites to get the word out about your business, a lot of owners feel lost. Fortunately, we’ve put together a guide to help get you up to speed.
What is Social Media?
Ultimately, social media is a way to connect with people: friends, family, business contacts, clients, potential customers, etc. As a business owner, it’s a fantastic way to remind consumers about your business in a fun, helpful way.
Regardless of which social media sites you use, it’s important to remain professional at all times. Make sure you add a bit of your personality, and follow these general guidelines:
- Be friendly
- Use complete sentences and correct grammar in your updates
- Remember the 80/20 rule – 20% of posts can be self-promotional, but make sure the other 80% provides something of value for followers (such as a helpful article or interesting infographic)
- If possible, include an image or video (research shows that users engagement is higher with visuals)
- Make sure you include an update or introduction along with each image, video or article to provide followers with context
- In general, keep updates short (one to two sentences)
- Avoid offensive language and controversial subjects
- In general, it’s best not to discuss politics or religion
