This post shares PR tips from sewing curtains. Another Pinterest project taken from ideation to reality, I decided to embark upon a big sewing project this weekend to spruce up my apartment’s interior design. After measuring my space, I took off to the fabric store to gather all of the supplies. A novice seamstress, I quickly learned a few things I didn’t know before; in addition, here are 4 PR tips I learned along the way.
4 PR Tips from Sewing Curtains
- Price All of Your Options
From picking out fabric to purchasing the curtain rod, I had to make a lot of decisions along the way. Fabric prices ranged drastically, as did their function, so I made sure to pick a lightweight choice that was inexpensive and would look nice in my apartment. These decisions also mirrored one of the most important PR tips, which is to look at all of your options. From choosing a public relations firm to suit your needs to even hiring and staffing social media managers, make sure you’ve weighed the pros and cons of all options.
- Think from an Outsider’s Perspective
In addition to picking out the design for the curtains, I had to think about what they would look like from the outside of my apartment. Since I’d be sewing the pieces in panels, I needed to create a white backdrop so it looked also pretty from outdoors. It’s important to remember to think from an outsider’s perspective when promoting your business because you have to pay attention to how you’ll be perceived by others.
- Recognize Vulnerabilities
When embarking on a sewing project, know the parts of your machine that frequently have issues or break down. The importance of recognizing vulnerabilities came to me more often than any other PR tips since my elementary sewing skills made it tough to create perfectly straight lines or even corners. When conducting public relations campaign, make sure to keep track of your weak points so you are prepared in advance.
- Get Ready to Improvise
My curtains aren’t quite finished yet, pending the arrival of a new piece to replace a broken one on my machine, but I wasn’t ready to give up yet! I got extra crafty in order to see my finished project in action and used clips to hang it to the curtain rod even though the stitching wasn’t quite complete. I’ll return later to add the final touches, but for now it’s in good working condition and the final piece makes me happy. In addition to being prepared for the worst, you may also need to improvise to spread your message if one channel doesn’t work.
Pricing and determining all of your options, thinking from the perspective of others, recognizing vulnerabilities and being prepared to think on your feet are all PR tips I learned from sewing my own curtains. Can you think of any others?
