An increasing number of businesses are using social media to connect with customers. Social media networks are all about communicating, sharing ideas and connecting. All communication on social media networks comes down to the words you use. Words can make or break interaction on social media sites. These tips will help you write great social media updates that truly engage your audience.
Be Brief
Character length limits vary on every social media network. Twitter allows for 140 characters while Facebook allows for 5000. This is a huge range, but regardless of what platform you’re using, brevity works in your favor. While Facebook provides us the space for 5000 character updates, a study from Buddy Media shows posts with 80 characters or less get 27% more interaction. Business2Community blogger Sonja Jobson says, “Regardless of the amount you’re allowed to write, always share your message in the shortest, most effective length possible.”
A Picture’s Worth 1000 Comments
Images promote likes, comments and shares. Studies show that posts with images get higher levels of interaction. With the increasing popularity of Pinterest, posts with images also drive traffic from the site. Images are incredibly important to social media updates because they grab your attention. Jeff Bullas says, “It takes only a split second to look at an image, versus a few to read a summary or small paragraph…don’t make people think too long or hard at first. Get them in and then you can work on keeping them with content.”
Focus on Content
The most important part of any update on a social media platform is the content. Are you engaging your audience with questions or new information? Hubspot blog says, “Every update you publish should provide value to the audience you want to reach. Don’t waste you and your fans/followers’ time with useless information. Share information that informs, engages, interests, and educates your target customer.” When your contact is interesting and engaging, your followers will be more likely to visit your page again.

These are really great tips, and since my business is very visual (interior design), it definitely helps to have images on my FB posts, and I think my Likers actually expect it. I really work to pay attention to which posts get the most interaction, and what the content was. I want to keep feeding them what they want to see, because what’s the point if you’re not going to get the interaction? A dull page with no comments or likes.
Glad you found the tips helpful Kathy! Photos and videos have always skewed high on social media platforms and with as many great visuals you have at Inside-Out Designs I’m sure you have some terrific ones to choose from!
